South African Cuisine

Hi Podcrash team! My name is Lyn, and I'm from South Africa 🇿🇦

I wanted to share some staples of our country as we have one of the most diverse cuisines out there. I assume that South Africans probably make up a very small percentage of those who play with your addons, so I understand you may be hesitant to add items that very few people are familiar with and cause the file to be bigger and longer to load, so if they don't make it then that's completely understandable! I'd still like share some of the most popular dishes from a variety of cultures within our amazing country - and who knows, maybe you add one or two!

(some of these aren’t necessarily south african but are VERY popular here)

  • Bunny Chow (don’t worry it doesn’t have bunnies in it!)
Bunny Chow is a chicken curry often served within a hollowed out half of a loaf of bread. It’s most popular in one of the three capital cities of South Africa: Durban. Durban’s cuisine has a lot of Indian influences, which reflects the high Indian population of the area. Bunny Chow is known to be incredibly spicy, which is why I thought it would be cool for it to give you speed 3 for a few seconds (referencing the Minecraft movie’s promotional lava chicken add-on which makes you super fast after eating a hot chicken dish!)
It’s VERY filling given the nutrient thick curry, high protein chicken, and bread bowl that it’s served in. It can also be called Durban curry (if you don’t want to confuse people by making them think they need rabbit or something) as the only difference is that Bunny Chow has the bread bowl, but it’s a minimal difference and I feel as though the bread bowl makes it feel more authentic.

  • Malva Pudding
The closest equivalent to Malva pudding I can think of is the British “Sticky Toffee Pudding”.
Malva pudding is a dense caramel-cinnamon-y cake cooked in an aluminium-foil tray, similar to those used to hold those lasagnas you put in the oven. It’s often served warm soaked in custard and topped with vanilla ice cream that melts into it. It’s a very popular dessert here. Sticky toffee pudding is a bit more popular world-wide, and a very good alternative if you want a similar (and still somewhat popular in south africa) dessert that’s more known.

  • Milk Tart
Also a very popular dessert here, it’s a biscuit+butter+sugar crumbed base, filled with a custard-based filling, baked, and topped with cinnamon. Some milk-tarts are fridge set, but baked milktart is widely considered to be superior.

  • Butter Chicken Curry
This is one of the dishes that aren’t South African, but is very popular here. It’s a slightly-spicy chicken curry, often served with - butter roti, rice, and topped with some coriander

There are a lot more, but I avoided foods that are too hard to pronounce, too vague (like whole categories of food) too similar to other dishes, or just wouldn’t ever fit the vibe of the addon.
